~*~ Early 20th Century Dress ~*~ At the beginning of the 1900's, women's fashion became more loose and soft, therefore loosing the boned bodices and hoop skirts. However, these were still commonly seen in the Alaskan frontier. Layers of undergarments are still seen but not as many as the era before the 1900's. Most woman from Dawson wore their hair long, like their mothers before them who had settled in the area. Occasionally some of the 'new' residents from off of the ship would have shorter, wavy hair and simpler dress attire that reflected the newest styles from the 'States', or from wherever they had come that had a fashionable taste. Women only wore breeches or trousers for dirty work, or for sledding purposes. Never did they wear them for casual or dress attire. In the wilderness, many woman did wear men-type clothing in order to have the effectiveness of keeping warm in the cold temperatures. Men's wear consisted of pants that extended to their ankles. Tail and overcoats on suits were also born during this time period. Men wore trousers with shirts, coats, and shoes. Shirts were normally off-color, off-white or striped. Suspenders held up trousers at the waist. Some movies can give you ideas on dress, such as: Titanic, White Fang, Newsies, ect. (Content provided by Ruth)
